Athens Targets Operational Independence

Fabio Caparica and Alexandros Diakopoulos signed the agreement.

The partnership aims to give the Hellenic Air Force independent operational and logistical support capability for a future Embraer C-390 Millennium fleet.

The programme also seeks to strengthen domestic industrial capacity inside Greece.

HAI plans to develop maintenance, repair and overhaul capabilities for the C-390 platform within the country. Greek officials view the initiative as a long-term industrial investment rather than a simple procurement agreement.

The MoU reinforces Embraer’s long-term European expansion strategy.

The company continues increasing its influence across aerospace, defence and logistics sectors throughout the continent.

He added that local C-390 support capability would support Greek Air Force operational requirements while creating a sustainable industrial base for the country.

Greece Moves Closer to C-390 Acquisition
C-130 Replacement Programme Advances

According to reports published by OnAlert on 22 April 2025, the C-390 Millennium officially entered Greece’s Long-Term Defence Procurement Programme.

Athens considers the aircraft a leading candidate to replace ageing US-built C-130 Hercules transport aircraft currently serving with the Greek Air Force.

Military planners reportedly recommended an initial acquisition of at least three C-390 aircraft, with options for additional orders later.

The procurement programme forms part of a 12-year defence planning framework.

However, Greece still prioritises the upgrade of 38 F-16 Block 50 fighters to the Viper configuration. Officials therefore expect implementation near the end of the current decade.

Strategic Insight

Greece increasingly links defence procurement with industrial sovereignty and long-term operational independence.

The C-390 partnership gives Athens more than transport aircraft capability. It creates local maintenance infrastructure, technical expertise and supply-chain resilience.

For Embraer, the agreement strengthens its position against traditional US and European competitors in the military airlift market.
